The Power of Words

The Power of Words invites world-renowned filmmakers and young storytellers to interpret the words of a visionary leader. In its inaugural year, the 2014 program honors Nelson Mandela.

This year’s program enables tomorrow’s leaders and thinkers to explore how Mandela’s legacy will have continued impact in the future. The project pairs five of today’s foremost filmmakers with five Tribeca Film Fellows®, emerging student storytellers from New York City. Each filmmaking team conceives of and produces a short film based on a quote by Nelson Mandela, creating five distinct interpretations that, through an accompanying education arm of the program, stand to connect younger viewers to Mandela for the first time.

The four-film series and accompanying transmedia project premiered in Cape Town, South Africa on November 13, 2014 before an international gathering of Mandela family members, public dignitaries, filmmakers, and the nation’s emerging youth leaders. See the films here.

To bring the films to a broad, young audience, TFI will distribute curricula to accompany the series through a partnership with the local Boys and Girls Club of America. As in our Tribeca Teaches® program, young people across the United States will be called upon to create their own films inspired by the series and based on their own unique understandings of Mandela’s words.

The initiative, supported by Montblanc, is developed from a partnership between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Tribeca Film Institute®.
